A carpet that looks perfect in a bright showroom, or on a phone screen, can look quite different on your own floor on a grey afternoon. This guide explains why that happens, how taking samples home fits into choosing carpet with us, and how to get the most out of a sample once it is in your room.

Can I take carpet samples home from Chelsea Carpets?

Yes. Taking samples away to view in your room’s own lighting is one of the steps in how we help customers choose flooring. Come into the showroom, talk through the room with the sales team, compare materials, colours and textures in person, and take the samples you are considering home with you.

Samples are one step in a simple process: showroom consultation, samples, a free local measurement, then a written quotation for your specific project. Ask the team in the showroom which samples are available for the ranges you are interested in.

Why does carpet colour look different at home?

Because colour shifts under different lighting. The same carpet can look warmer, cooler, lighter or darker depending on the light it sits in, and the light in your home is not the light in our showroom or on your screen.

  • Showroom light versus home light. A hallway with little natural light can make a carpet look darker than it did in a bright showroom.
  • Screens cannot show texture. You cannot feel pile on a screen, and photographs cannot show how a loop, twist or velvet carpet catches the light.
  • Your room has its own colours. Walls, curtains, furniture and woodwork all change how a carpet reads once it is in place.

One of the most common assumptions we hear is that a carpet can be judged from website photos. It cannot, and that is the best argument for seeing samples in person, and in your own home, before you order.

How should I look at a carpet sample in my own light?

A few simple habits make a sample far more useful:

  1. Put it on the floor. Carpet is seen from above and at an angle, so look at the sample where it will actually be laid, not held up against a wall.
  2. Look at different times of day. Check it in morning light, afternoon light and in the evening with your lamps and ceiling lights on.
  3. Try the brightest and darkest spots. Look at the sample by the window and in the darkest corner of the room.
  4. Compare samples side by side. If you have shortlisted two or three, lay them next to each other in the same light.
  5. Feel it as well as look at it. Walk on it in socks or bare feet. How a carpet feels is as much part of the choice as its colour.
  6. Think about the whole room. In a busy hallway or family living room, a mid-tone, flecked or textured colour can hide everyday dirt better than a very pale or very dark one.

Is a sample enough to decide which carpet to buy?

A sample answers the colour and texture question. The rest of the decision comes from matching the carpet to the room. Durability comes from construction and suitability rating, not price alone, and neither wool nor synthetic is universally better: the right choice depends on the room, the traffic, comfort and maintenance expectations.

That is why the showroom conversation matters. The team talks through room use, traffic, pile and specification with you, so the samples you take home are already suited to the room. For help with specific rooms, read our guides to which carpet is best for stairs and the carpet that suits a hallway or a busy family living room.
