Sales & expert advice

There is no single best carpet for every staircase. The right stair carpet depends on how much traffic the stairs take, who uses them, the look you want and how much maintenance you are happy with – and on the product’s construction and suitability rating, not its price alone. The easiest way to choose is to compare samples in person and have the stairs measured properly before you order.

Stairs are one of the hardest-working places in a home, and one of the trickiest to carpet. At Chelsea Carpets, our showroom at 354 Fulham Rd., London, this is one of the questions customers ask us most. Here is how we help people decide.

What to think about before choosing a stair carpet

Fitted stair carpet or a stair runner?

A fitted stair carpet covers the full width of each tread and riser. A stair runner sits down the centre of the staircase and leaves a border of the stairs showing at each side. We sell both; you can browse our stair runners and the full carpet range, then compare them in the showroom.

Can natural flooring go on stairs?

We sell natural floor coverings such as sisal and seagrass. Each natural material has different characteristics and suitability, so rather than assume it will work on your stairs, ask the team to talk you through the specific product and how it suits your staircase and the way it is used.

Why measuring stairs properly matters

Stairs, landings, doorways and awkward shapes change how much carpet is needed. An inaccurate measurement is the most common cause of a wrong order, which is why we offer a free local measurement: the property is measured properly, including stairs, doorways and awkward shapes, and you receive a written quotation covering the flooring, underlay, accessories and installation requirements for your project.

Common questions

Can I take samples home to see the colour on my stairs?

Yes. Colour shifts under different lighting and you cannot feel pile on a screen, so taking samples home to view in your own light is part of how we help customers choose.

Do you measure, and is the measurement free?

We offer a free local measurement and quotation across Chelsea and the surrounding South-West London areas.

Is the most expensive carpet the most durable on stairs?

Not necessarily. Durability comes from construction and suitability rating, not price alone.

What warranty comes with a stair carpet?

Where a warranty applies, it is the manufacturer’s product warranty for that specific carpet. The team will explain it for the product you choose.

Can you make a rug to my dimensions?

Yes – made-to-order rugs can be designed with our online Rug Builder, choosing the dimensions, supplier, product and border.
