Wool or Synthetic Carpet: Which Should I Choose?

Wool carpet is made from a natural fibre that is resilient, warm and soft underfoot; synthetic carpets such as polypropylene, nylon and polyester are man-made fibres that are generally easier to clean and, in the case of polypropylene, resistant to many water-based stains. Neither is universally better: the right choice depends on the room, the traffic, the comfort you want and how you prefer to look after it. Wool blends sit in between.

Customers who visit our showroom at 354 Fulham Rd., London often arrive unsure which material suits which room. We sell wool, wool blend, nylon, polypropylene, polyester, silk and Tencel carpets, so we have no reason to steer you towards one fibre. This guide explains the real differences, which rooms each tends to suit, and how to decide for your home.

By the Chelsea Carpets Flooring Team, Flooring Specialists. The team provides flooring advice from the Fulham Road showroom, with experience across carpet, wool, natural floor coverings, vinyl, LVT, laminate and wood flooring.

What is the difference between wool and synthetic carpet?

The difference is the fibre the pile is made from. Wool is a natural fibre with a warm, soft feel that is naturally resilient, so the pile tends to recover well after being walked on. Synthetic carpets are made from man-made fibres such as polypropylene, nylon and polyester, which are generally chosen for practicality, easy cleaning and resistance to many everyday stains.

The fibre is only part of the story. How a carpet is constructed (loop, twist, velvet), its suitability rating and the underlay beneath it all affect how it feels and how it wears. Two carpets made from the same fibre can perform very differently, so always look at the full specification, not the fibre alone.

How do wool, wool blend and synthetic carpets compare?

In general terms, the main carpet fibres compare like this. Care and performance vary from product to product, so always check the individual product page and the manufacturer’s guidance for the carpet you choose.

FibreWhat it isIn generalOften chosen for
WoolNatural fibreNaturally resilient, so the pile tends to recover well; warm, soft feelLiving rooms and bedrooms where comfort matters
Wool blendWool combined with a man-made fibreAims to balance the feel of wool with some of the practicality of syntheticsFamily homes wanting a middle ground
PolypropyleneMan-made fibreGenerally easy to clean and resistant to many water-based stains; some can be cleaned with stronger products than wool would tolerateHomes with young children or pets, rooms where spills are likely
NylonMan-made fibreGenerally known for being hard-wearing and resilientAreas with a lot of foot traffic
PolyesterMan-made fibreA man-made option in our range; feel and performance vary by productAsk the team about the specific carpet

Is wool carpet better than synthetic?

No, wool is not automatically better than synthetic, and synthetic is not automatically better than wool. Neither fibre is universally better. Wool is valued for its natural resilience and warm, soft feel; synthetics are valued for easy cleaning and stain resistance. Which matters more depends on the room and the people using it.

It is also worth saying that the most expensive carpet is not automatically the most durable. Durability comes from construction and suitability rating, not price alone. A synthetic carpet with the right suitability rating may suit a busy hallway better than a wool carpet rated for bedrooms, and the reverse is true too.

What does a real specification look like?

Looking at real products makes the comparison clearer. Here are three Cormar carpets from our range, one wool, one wool blend and one polypropylene, as listed on their product pages:

CarpetMaterialSuitabilityStain & wear warranty
Cormar Wool loop Shetland100% Pure New WoolExtra Heavy Domestic / Medium Contract10 years
Cormar Wool loop Pimlico50% Wool, 50% PolypropyleneExtra Heavy Domestic / Medium Contract10 years
Cormar Primo Plus100% Excellon polypropyleneExtra Heavy Domestic / Medium Contract10 years

These three share the same suitability rating, which shows that a wool carpet, a wool blend and a synthetic carpet can each be made for heavy use. The warranty shown is the manufacturer’s product warranty for that specific carpet, not a warranty that applies to every carpet or every brand. Always check the specification on the individual product page and ask us to confirm it for the colour you choose.

Which fibre should I choose for each room?

Choose the fibre by how the room is used. Start with traffic and the likelihood of spills, then think about comfort and how you want to clean it. As a general guide:

  • Living rooms: wool is a popular choice where comfort matters; a wool blend or polypropylene may suit a busy family living room with children or pets.
  • Bedrooms: traffic is usually lighter, so comfort and feel underfoot often lead the decision, and wool, wool blends and softer synthetics are all worth comparing.
  • Hallways and landings: check the suitability rating first; nylon is generally known for being hard-wearing, and polypropylene for being easy to clean. Our guide to carpet for hallways and busy family living rooms covers these rooms in detail.
  • Stairs: stairs take concentrated wear, so the suitability rating and construction matter as much as the fibre. See our guide to choosing the best carpet for stairs.
  • Rooms where spills are likely: polypropylene is generally easy to clean and resistant to many water-based stains.

How do I decide between wool and synthetic?

The easiest way to decide is to answer a few questions honestly, then compare samples of each fibre side by side. Colour shifts under different lighting and you cannot feel pile on a screen, so seeing and feeling the carpets in person is the quickest route to the right choice.

  1. How busy is the room? Check the suitability rating first, whatever the fibre.
  2. How likely are spills? If often, look closely at polypropylene and other easy-clean synthetics, or a wool blend.
  3. How important is comfort and a natural fibre? If very, start with wool.
  4. How do you want to clean it? Cleaning advice varies from product to product, so follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the carpet you choose.
  5. What look do you want? Loop, twist and velvet constructions look and feel different, and each is available in more than one fibre.
  6. What underlay will go with it? Underlay affects feel, wear and lifespan, so it is part of the specification, not an optional extra.

Common questions about wool and synthetic carpet

Is a wool blend a good compromise?

For many family homes, yes. Wool blends combine wool with a man-made fibre, aiming to balance the feel of wool with some of the practicality of synthetics. The Cormar Wool loop Pimlico, for example, is 50% wool and 50% polypropylene.

Is synthetic carpet easier to clean than wool?

Polypropylene carpets are generally easy to clean and resistant to many water-based stains, and some can be cleaned with stronger products than wool would tolerate. Cleaning advice varies by product, so always follow the manufacturer’s guidance.

Can I take samples home to compare wool and synthetic?

Yes. Taking samples home to view in your own light is part of how we help customers choose, and it is one of the most useful things you can do before ordering.

What warranty comes with the carpet?

Where a warranty applies, it is the manufacturer’s product warranty for that specific carpet. The team will explain it for the product you choose.

Do you measure, and is the measurement free?

We offer a free local measurement and quotation across Chelsea and the surrounding South-West London areas. Measurements, quotations and flooring recommendations depend on the individual property, the selected materials and the installation requirements.
